Loring Air Force Base
This former base in Aroostook County, built in the 1950's, was the closest to the Soviet Union. Nuclear weapons were contained here during the height of the Cold War.
The largest hanger on the base, as well as several other buildings, are currently in use today. The hangers in these photos were being used for the storage of sand used on icy roads.
My Dad and I took the trip to Limestone from Madawaska during my winter break from college. It was a frigid 10 degrees below zero, plus wind chill. I happened to think ahead, and packed some rubber bands in my camera bag. These came in handy because I couldn't get the closure tab licked and sealed in the cold when I finished a roll of the medium format film.
